Wyatt launches next-generation viscometer

ViscoStar viscometer is called an “innovative new instrument” by its manufacturer, Wyatt Technology . Next-generation device features a traditional four-arm “bridge” design and combines accuracy with contemporary electronics. It can be integrated with the company’s Multi-Angle Light Scattering (MALS) detectors and Astra software for use in chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device applications.

According to the manufacturer, the device claims a number of firsts. They include the following:

• Advanced Peltier temperature control (4 °C to 60 °C) eliminates the need for an external water bath and lets the device operate at the same temperatures as the HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography) separation;

• Proprietary band-broadening correction algorithm integrated in the Astra software solves the problem of inter-detector band broadening;

• Pump pulses are reduced by the Astra-software-based pulse dampening correction algorithm;

• Software enables compliance with 21 CFR Part 11; and

• Device accepts external signals for zero, purge, and recycle.

Viscometer measures intrinsic viscosity across the peaks of monodisperse samples to provide accurate readings for the first time, says the manufacturer. Instrument incorporates a high-efficiency heat exchange to offer extremely stable baselines and achieves at least twice the signal-to-noise ratio of any other currently available viscometer. Transducer Protection System (TPS) protects sensitive transducer membranes from accidental damage.
