Baden, Switzerland — To strengthen its expert systems offerings in the cement, mining, and material industries, ABB’s Building Material and Mineral Industries (BMI) division agreed Dec. 4, 1998, to buy the technology assets of Comdale Technologies Inc. (Toronto, Ontario, Canada). Comdale became available for purchase on Nov. 25, 1998, after the Provincial Courts of Ontario declared the company bankrupt. ABB expects to complete this acquisition when Comdale emerges from its bankruptcy proceedings. Terms were not yet available.

In a recent online letter to Comdale customers, ABB acknowledged that Comdale’s customers haven’t received information, service and support for several weeks. Though it hasn’t taken over Comdale’s contractual obligations, ABB added it’s committed to serving Comdale customers with minimal interruptions and providing ongoing support for their systems. Comdale’s products include SmartWorx software tools, ProcessVision human-machine interface, Comdale/X, and Comdale/C.

ABB is also building an application and support center at its Milton, Ontario, facility to support Comdale customers in Canada and the U.S. Customers in other countries are being supported from ABB BMI’s Baden headquarters. Several former Comdale employees have joined ABB BMI to help establish the support center.

ABB BMI supplies electrical equipment, large drives applications, and automation systems, including expert systems and information management systems. ABB BMI plans to integrate Comdale’s applications into its process optimization solutions. Already a dominant player in the cement field, ABB is expanding into other mineral industries such as copper, zinc, iron ore, and others. As a result, ABB BMI expects Comdale’s applications to mesh well with its existing activities.
