Aegis’ manufacturing IT survey: Most record keeping is paper, pharma and biotech firms say
Life sciences manufacturers continue to face data challenges - more than 60% report "moderate" or "significant" variability in processes despite despite significant IT investments.
Aegis Analytical Corp., provider of enterprise manufacturing intelligence (EMI) software, found that more than 60 percent of 538 pharmaceutical and biotech manufacturing professionals surveyed reported "moderate" or "significant" variability in their processes despite many years of significant IT investments. The survey was designed to help understand trends associated with accessing and using manufacturing data.

Findings showed revealing comparisons between small/medium and large companies in categories such as process variability, data access, aggregation and analysis systems, and data storage/maintenance and challenges.
"Large companies have invested more heavily in IT infrastructure than smaller companies, yet they still spend significant time accessing and analyzing data and they continue to experience unacceptable process variability," said Dr. Justin Neway, Aegis Analytical’s chief science officer. "Process variability can lead to time-consuming failure investigations, needlessly high costs and risks, and inefficient supply chains that can be avoided through better process understanding. The solution is self-service data access and effective data analysis tools to investigate and better understand the root causes of process variability."
Survey also showed:
– The biggest challenges facing life sciences companies are the amount of time spent gathering data from multiple sources, followed by analyzing data once it has been gathered.
– More than 24 percent of large life sciences companies store manufacturing data on paper, resulting in additional challenges with data access and analysis.
– Large companies have invested more heavily in IT Infrastructure – systems such as LIMS, MES, ERP – yet they still feel they spend too much time gathering data for analysis.
Aegis Analytical did the survey with PharmaceuticalManufacturing.com and offers a pharmaceutical and biotech manufacturing IT white paper , which summarizes the key trends and implications from the findings, along with solutions to help manufacturers improve process predictability and outcomes .
Aegis’ enterprise-class software platform, Discoverant, is said to help leverage existing IT investments and enable on-demand and scheduled access to all manufacturing, quality and process development data for process performance analysis and visibility.
