AS-i safety approach networks failsafe systems

A networking solution frequently used for low-level automation, AS-Interface (AS-i) recently added the ability to connect safety-related components, such as stop switches, door contact switches, and light curtains. AS-i will eliminate the need for conventional safety wiring, reducing networks’ engineering and cabling costs. Companies cooperating in AS-i’s “Safety at Work” program include: Schneider Electric, Siemens, Leuze electronic, ifm electronic, Pepperl+Fuchs, and Festo. “Safety at Work” will allow production system designers to incorporate failsafe components into standard AS-i networks. Devices such as masters, slaves, power supplies, and repeaters are compatible and can coexist with safety devices on the same network. Current AS-i networks can be extended to include the new safety functionality; only a couple of additional set-up steps are involved in calibrating the monitor and carrying out safety checks. The AS-i “Safety at Work” concept offers up to Safety Integrity Level 4 (SIL4) performance according to EN 954-1. It is undergoing tests by BIA and TV, the German certification authorities. First products are expected in 2Q00.
