At 1/10 cost of traditional vision, UV sensor detects glue

EMX Industries Inc. , a manufacturer of sensors for industrial automation, says it’s UVX-300G, UV (ultraviolet light) luminescence sensor improves control of glue and adhesive dispensing, using patented technology to provide long-range sensing/detection said to be ‘more reliable than vision systems that typically cost 10 times more.’

As feedback to a control system, the sensor can precisely measure the amount of applied glue, or it can be used to check for gaps in glue dispensing, excess glue on joints, and clogged nozzles. Adhesives that are not naturally luminescent can respond to UV light with additives.

Five user-selectable gain settings and readings are available 0-99; optional 50-mm lens will concentrate the spot of projected UV light into a 5-mm space. Operating distance of 350 mm ensures the sensor will not get bumped or dirtied by passing targets. Feedback response time is 6 kHz. For setting, the device numerically displays the intensity of each reading (relative reflection and threshold) and allows for user control of hysteresis. It has auto-teach and manual calibration. Integration is made easier by low power consumption, under 60 mA. UV light source is a long-life LED, providing 100,000 hours of service. It measures 3 x 2.3 x 0.75 in.
