Australian refinery awards $10 M automation and control contract to Honeywell

Phoenix, Ariz. and Sydney, Australia - The Industry Solutions business of Honeywell announced on May 21, 2002 that Comalco, a wholly owned subsidiary of Rio Tinto, has selected it as the automation and control system supplier for the Comalco Alumina Refinery at Gladstone, Queensland, Australia.

Phoenix, Ariz. and Sydney, Australia – The Industry Solutions business of Honeywell announced on May 21, 2002 that Comalco, a wholly owned subsidiary of Rio Tinto, has selected it as the automation and control system supplier for the Comalco Alumina Refinery at Gladstone, Queensland, Australia.

Honeywell will provide the Distributed Control System (DCS); Process Information System, including Hi-Spec’s Uniformance business highway integration; data, voice and video networks; field instrumentation; and the security systems, including the Honeywell Digital Video Manager CCTV system.

The initial phase of the Refinery will have a design capacity of 1.4 million ton/yr of alumina, expandable to 4.0 million ton/yr dependent on market requirements. The construction and commissioning of the refinery will be completed in three years with the first product shipped in early 2005. The refinery’s production facilities include a steam-generation plant, bauxite residue storage area, port facility, a materials handling and transportation area, and associated stockpile areas.
