Axiomtek: Operating system support widens with in-house Linux

By introducing its own embedded Linux operating system (OS), Axiomtek has notably expanded OS support for the company’s x86 PC architecture platforms. Built on the 2.4.25 Linux kernel, the new operating system reportedly embeds easily onto Axiomtek’s 5.25-in. “petit,” 3.5-in. “capa,” PC/104, and half-size single-board product families—providing users (software developers, manufacturers, or system integrators) with reduced build costs, development times, and total cost of ownership of their systems.“The 2.4.25 kernel was selected due to its stability and robust onboard functions in support of device drivers and interfaces for XFree86 and X-Windows/QT graphic functions,” says Kit Chui, Axiomtek product director. “Ability to acquire a complete system interface solution (PC board and Linux operating system) from one vendor offers our customers greater confidence in system compatibility as well as service and support in times of need.”

Axiomtek, a leading provider of industrial and embedded systems/components, is not a newcomer to supplying operating system support for its products. It already supports Microsoft Windows CE, CE.Net, XP embedded systems, plus Lineo Solution’s embedded Linux products. Specialized integration services also are a part of the company’s support via a branded offering called eSMART. This offering tests and validates custom integration work on its PC board product platforms, including device drivers and IRQ settings; embedded Linux functions; customer proprietary device drivers/applications; bootloader; and utilities as needed. Customers benefit from obtaining a PC-board prototype ready for mass production.

Users comfortable in doing their own Linux integration on Axiomtek’s PC board platforms can access and download the OS from the company’s FTP site. A Software Development Kit also is available to customize features, such as multi-language support and keyboard layout time zone.
