Ice cream maker Ben & Jerry’s recently installed the Rockwell OEM version of OpenBatch and RSBatch from PID Inc. (Phoenix, Ariz.) to enhance the existing PLC-based control system at its newest and biggest plant in St. Albans, Vt. The software controls the mix making process of Ben & Jerry’s ingredients.

With consulting and training help from PID, Ben & Jerry’s engineers designed and implemented the system themselves between December 1997 and April 1998.

The systems was designed, developed and retrofitted into existing hardware and software in less than 300 person-hours. Ben & Jerry’s officials at the recent World Batch Forum here say the enhanced system has more flexible and robust equipment control for faster new product rollouts, better batch system control for high quality mixing, and automated batch reporting to reduce paperwork.
