Irvine, Calif. – Burkert USA introduced April 23 an AS-interface (AS-i) bus connection for its flow, level, pressure and temperature transmitters/switches. This follows its previously released AS-i valve actuation packages.

“AS-i connectivity to all four process values is an industry first,” says Hal Reisiger, Burkert USA’a president. “The AS-interface is tailored to the needs of devices such as sensors and valves, in which low installation cost per device is critical and simplicity is paramount.”

AS-i is a simple, two-wire cabling method that carries power and data to multiple process points. It is an easy connection solution for interfacing sensors with pumps and process valves. Its mechanical profile guarantees correct connection every time, while its insulation displacement connection technology ensures fast connection and disconnection.

AS-i allows up to four input or four output signals in bi-directional modules, which permits up to 248 binary signals in one cable network. In addition, an AS-i system contains one master and up to 31 slaves. The master may be part of the first control level, serving with a PLC, PC, IPC; it may work as a coupler; or it may be part of a fieldbus network running DeviceNet or Profibus.

AS-I running to all sensor points eliminates multiple wires to multiple sensors, resulting in substantial cost savings. Other benefits include easy installation, expandability, safety and reliability. As a result, it is a versatile, low cost, easy-to-install cabling solution designed to replace a traditional parallel wiring system with a digital one.
