Contemporary Controls teaches Ethernet at free virtual university

Most individuals encounter some difficulties when installing Ethernet-based systems. To deliver accurate information on this technology, Contemporary Controls has launched its free Virtual Industrial Ethernet University (IEU). George Thomas, Contemporary’s president, says IEU will offer one source for key concepts about Industrial Ethernet. ”Ethernet has made a strong impact in instrumentation, monitoring, and control applications. Our goal is to increase the familiarity about this technology because more expertise is needed to ensure successful installations.”

IEU’s curriculum offers 11 courses developed by the company and from experts worldwide, which students can take at their own pace. Five level-100 courses introduce Ethernet at the physical and data link layers, while four level-200 courses discuss Ethernet’s application with Internet-related protocols. Two level-300 courses cover advanced Ethernet subjects, including fiber-optic operation. All material is vendor-neutral and is based on the IEEE Std. 802.3 and relevant Request for Comments (RFCs).

”As time goes by, courses will be added to address Ethernet technology’s advances that will influence the industry,” adds Thomas.

William Greer, Contemporary’s product specialist, is IEU’s virtual professor. Greer will answer any question by private e-mail. If he is unable to provide sufficient clarification, other experts from the company or outside sources will be consulted. Additional reference information may be obtained through the university’s library and bookstore.

Students must master and complete a minimum of 10 courses to qualify for ”graduation.” Upon graduation, students will receive a certificate of accomplishment and the opportunity to add their names to IEU’s alumni directory. However, graduation isn’t mandatory, and students can simply take courses they’re interested in free of charge.
