Control utility: Valve analysis plug-in for AMS suite

By Control Engineering Staff December 6, 2006

Flowserve Corp . now offers a specialized software utility plug-in for Emerson Process Management’s AMS suite of asset management tools. Flowserve’s ValveAnalysis package allows AMS users to run diagnostic signatures for Flowserve valves, actuators, and positioners, reportedly providing key information that can help maximize equipment performance.

While AMS already has capabilities to use the valves’ calibration and alarm functions, the new utility adds diagnostic signature analysis beyond AMS’ offering. Given the thousands of Flowserve valves running in AMS and Emerson DCS environments, this utility has a wide potential market.

ValveAnalysis integrates with Flowserve Logix 520si and 3200 IQ HART positioners. Flowserve says it integrates with AMS rather than bypassing it, ensuring that a complete device history remains in the system. At the same time, ValveAnalysis does not duplicate AMS functions, keeping the utility as small and cost-effective as possible.

The utility can perform diagnostic tests, including ramp signature and HDL. Ramp signature helps identify mechanical conditions such as leaks in tubing fittings, improperly aligned plugs and seats, loose linkage, broken actuator springs, and sticky spool valves. HDL tests calculate four standard diagnostic signatures: hysteresis, deadband, repeatability, and linearity. These signatures can be saved for future comparison to determine changes in equipment performance over time and schedule maintenance.
