Digital automation system selected for power project

Foxboro, MA —A digital automation system from Invensys/Foxboro has been selected as part of a phased control system modernization project at a Central Texas power generating facility. The Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) will use I/A Series digital automation in a project at Fayette Power, a 1,641-MW, three-unit, coal-fired power plant near LaGrange, TX.

The automation system will replace existing, ash-handling PLC-system controls in Units 1 and 2, each with a 598-MW capacity. I/A Series systems are used for boiler and turbine control. The system will connect with approximately 1,300 I/O points using a variety of HART-enabled equipment and other field devices. Invensys will provide site engineering and field services as well. Future phases planned for new scrubbers on these units will also use I/A Series automation.

The new systems at Fayette build on existing Invensys control infrastructure. Triconex triple redundant controller applications are planned for the overspeed trips on major turbines. The plant is also implementing a SimSci-Esscor simulator for training. The new ash handling automation system will let LCRA further integrate site controls and enhance automation efficiency.

LCRA is a conservation and reclamation district created by the Texas legislature. It supplies low-cost electricity to Central Texas, manages water supplies and flood in the lower Colorado river basin, develops water and wastewater utilities, and supports community and economic development.
