Dutch Rijkswaterstaat picks Axeda DRM for bridge, lock management

By Control Engineering Staff July 12, 2002

Mansfield, Mass.- Axeda Systems Inc. announced July 9 that Rijkswaterstaat (RWS) has selected Axeda Supervisor, a component of Axeda’s Device Relationship Management (DRM) system, to remotely manage and control critical bridge systems and continuously monitor salt water introduced into the Province of Zeeland’s rivers. Rijkswaterstaat is a directorate-general of the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management builds and maintains bridges, roads, dikes and water locks. The directorate-general is likewise responsible for flood protection, clean and sufficient water supplies, and the management and construction of highways and waterways.

‘Axeda DRM enables us to streamline our critical bridge and water operations with real-time automation and remote monitoring of vital system components,’ says Jan Bosland, RWS’ planning engineering inspection manager for computers and electronics. ‘Continuous, remote monitoring of water quality helps us to maintain a good supply of freshwater for farming and irrigation.’

Robert Russell, Axeda’s chairman and ceo, adds that, ‘We’re very pleased that RWS hasl system components.’

RWS is using Axeda Supervisor for managing and controlling 25 devices that are part of its systems of water locks and moveable bridges of various sizes and complexities; remotely monitoring status and safety, sounding alarms; and completing other tasks linked to asset security and environmental management. Axeda will also help manage the amount of salt water introduced into the rivers of Zeeland by monitoring the sea water and river water ratio at one of these devices, the Krammer locks, built in 1986. One of RWS’ key challenges is to keep the two water systems separate, so that no salt water escapes into the agricultural areas.

Axeda DRM allows users to access the Internet to remotely monitor, manage and service intelligent devices, automating the real-time management of critical business and operational information. A component of Axeda DRM, the Axeda Supervisor suite provides an Internet-based decision support solution for managing devices, facilities and automation systems. It incorporates device relationship management technology to give customers the benefits of supervisory control, sophisticated scheduling, multiple remote access options, secure Firewall-Friendly communications, rapid application development and connectivity with enterprise databases and applications.
