EC: FactoryTalk Transaction Manager

Software - connectivity, integration software: Rockwell Automation FactoryTalk Transaction Manager. FactoryTalk Transaction Manager software helps manufacturers manage manufacturing processes by integrating the critical data on the shopfloor control systems with enterprise IT and other manufacturing applications. This is a Control Engineering 2011 Engineers' Choice (EC) nominee.

In the enterprise world, transactions are used every day to tightly link multiple systems so that they act as one. An industrial transaction does the same thing, except that, instead of linking multiple database systems, it links control systems to database systems. The result: a true, end-to-end link is established that provides the level of reliability required to support enterprisewide integration. FactoryTalk Transaction Manager software is an industrial data transaction manager that sends data to and from control systems (human-machine interfaces, PLCs and controllers) and enterprise systems (databases, custom applications, and Historian Classic and Metrics systems). Its primary use is the gathering of data from the shopfloor and inserting it into an enterprise database.

FactoryTalk Transaction Manager also is used to download data from enterprise databases and applications to the control system. The transaction monitor shows operators how many transactions have run and whether they have passed or failed. It also shows if any transactions failed when attempting to talk to the databases and how many transactions are cached if the connection to the data base is temporarily lost. This helps operators save time and effort.

FactoryTalk Transaction Manager software is used in a variety of data-logging situations where production data from the control system needs to be saved in a database. It also allows manufacturers to: Provide two-way exchange of data between applications, a database and the control system for downloading recipes, production schedules or other information into the control system; Support reading from and writing control system data into commercial databases (e.g., Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle); Manage, track and log data exchanges or transactions; Apply to custom MES-like applications. The latest version increases usability with support for more data types, including BOOL and LINT, and improves performance on operating systems and SQL platforms with support for Windows 2008 Standard Edition.
