EC: MR-JN Servo

Motion control – Servo drives: The MR-JN series of servo drives from Mitsubishi Electric Automation feature a "one-touch button" that automatically completes auto-tuning on the machine. This is a Control Engineering 2012 Engineers’ Choice honorable mention.

November 18, 2011

The MR-JN series of servo drives has been developed specifically for stepper motor applications. The compact, economical MR-JN provides OEMs and end users with servo performance on machines without the complexity of traditional stepper or servo solutions. The MR-JN can tune a machine with only one touch of a button on the front of the amplifier, automatically learning machine conditions and motion profiles through encoder feedback. The MR-JN’s amplifier then decides the best moment of inertia and the best gains for the machine on the fly, and completes the tuning process. A three-digit display indicates when tuning is complete. This whole process only takes about 2 minutes, rather than several hours or days. The three-digit display is also very helpful to maintenance engineers, providing details about any alarms and quickly identifying the cause of a problem.

Available in 50-, 100-, 200-, and 400-W sizes with 100- and 200-V ac power supplies, the MR-JN series provides the flexibility to tailor axes to a machine’s actual power requirement, minimizing system size and cost. Its compact bookcase-style mounting design means smaller electrical panels are needed for X-Y tables and applications such as conveyors; food processing machines; loaders and unloaders; robots; medical devices; laboratory automation equipment; and semiconductor, LCD, and solar battery processing machines.

Mitsubishi Electric Automation’s popular Advanced Vibration Controller feature is also available on the MR-JN amplifier and is easily implemented by setting the tuning parameters. And a new Tough Drive Function on the MR-JN reduces mechanical wear by continually monitoring and adjusting low-pass filters, eliminating resonance and vibrations as the machine ages.
