Electric Servo Motors Product Focus Study, June 2003
Research was undertaken to gain a better understanding of Control Engineering subscribers’ applications and needs regarding electric servo motors.
•Among those specifying, recommending, and/or buying electric servo motors, 68% do so for in-plant requirements and 50% buy for OEM requirements.
•Machine tools and packaging machines tied as the single most common application for electric servo motors.
•On average, 53% of respondents’ electric servo motor applications are new applications. •Eighty-seven percent of respondents preferred brushless electric servo motors over brush dc types.
•The most preferred purchase method is to match the motor and controller together.
•Seventy-seven percent of respondents currently use electric servo motors with power/size ratings of 1kW or less. Results suggest that it will continue to be the most common power/size rating one year from now.
•Nearly half of the participants require electric servo motor speed capabilities of 3,000 rpm or less.
•Pricing, standard sizes, and EMI/RFI protection emerged as the key functional selection criteria for our respondents. Software for setup/tuning, high torque at low speed, and high output torque emerged as key performance selection criteria.
•Currently, 29% of respondents use linear servo motors and 32% plan to use them in the next year.
•Over one-third of the respondents have their servo motors in a networked environment. Among this segment, DeviceNet is currently the most popular communication network, with 71% using it. Results suggest that Ethernet will emerge in the next year as most popular with 74% of respondents planning to use it.
•Seventy-three percent of the qualified respondents either currently use or plan to use in the next 12 months servo motors and controls in one integral package.
•Almost half of the respondents bought servo motors from Rockwell Automation in the past 12 months.
