Emerson’s SIS promotes safer process plants

Smart safety instrumented system (SIS) takes an integrated complete-safety-loop approach. |
Emerson Process Management ’s new smart safety instrumented system (SIS) extends PlantWeb digital plant architecture to allow customers to implement safer process plants. It employs digital intelligence and diagnostics from sensor to logic solver to final control. Automated safety-loop testing and a variety of other features increase system availability while reducing life-cycle costs and easing regulatory compliance.
SIS solutions are built from PlantWeb technologies and include intelligent field devices, predictive diagnostics, and digital communications. They ensure an SIL3 (safety integrity level) approach that includes transmitters and valve controllers certified to IEC 61508 and SIL3-ratified safety systems. An SIS may be integrated with mainstream basic process control systems for facility-wide overview, while maintaining separation of safety-critical elements as required by IEC standards. Safety data and alarms are presented on DeltaV operator interfaces, stored in its historians, and passed to AMS Suite: Intelligent Device Manager software for integrated documentation and management.
System includes:
-
DeltaV SIS systems that communicate with SIS sensors and final control elements;
-
SIS sensors, including Rosemount’s 3051S pressure transmitter and 3144P temperature transmitter;
-
Final control elements with partial stroke testing, including SIL-PAC emergency shutdown valves;
-
DeltaV SIS software; and
-
AMS Device Manager software.
[Above] DeltaV SIS system is comprised of sixteen-channel, modular logic solvers and can be deployed in distributed fashion to perform programmable electronic system functions for virtually any safety need. It digitally integrates with intelligent safety-certified sensors and final control elements. The system uses diagnostics within field devices to increase availability. |
[Below] Rosemount 3051S Series pressure transmitter (left) is now available with IEC 61508 certification. Supervisory electronics can be added to the device at the time of order or in the field as a “plug-and-play” upgrade. Diagnostics within the transmitter provide predictive unit and process health data delivered as needed for improving safety or mainstream control using Hart communications protocol. Rosemount 3144P temperature transmitter is also now available with IEC 61508 certification. Existing devices can be upgraded by replacing a standard electronics assembly with a safety certified assembly. Device comes with both single and dual sensor input capabilities. Dual-sensor configuration automatically switches to the backup sensor if the primary sensor fails. |

[Above] Final control elements with automated partial-stroke testing improve the safety level, reducing the number of field trips and increasing the mandatory proof test interval. Palette of certified smart function blocks lets users accomplish tasks with drag-and-drop techniques. |
John Berra, president of Emerson Process Management, says smart SIS delivers the same ease of use and efficiencies for safety in process facilities as PlantWeb architecture does for mainstream process automation.
