ESC 2004: WinSystems’ PC/104 DAC system module

A new PC/104 industrial data acquisition (DAC) module introduced by WinSystems combines a 32 channel, 16-bit analog-to-digital (A/D) converter; 4-channel, 12-bit D/A converter; 16 digital I/O lines; and event trigger control on a single board.

A new PC/104 industrial data acquisition (DAC) module introduced by WinSystems combines a 32 channel, 16-bit analog-to-digital (A/D) converter; 4-channel, 12-bit D/A converter; 16 digital I/O lines; and event trigger control on a single board. Named PCM-ADIO, the board targets applications requiring sources from thermocouples, bridges, and monitored voltages representing myriad parameters (temperature, pressure, acceleration, vibration, flow rate, current, etc.) with little or no external signal conditioning circuitry. Digital and analog outputs are available for process control.

An onboard microprocessor controls numerous input and output functions, calibration, digital I/O settings, and other features without the need for jumpers or potentiometers. A Triscend TE520 Configurable System-on-Chip (CSoC) provides intelligence for independent configuration of each channel as single ended or differential input, eight different input ranges, variable conversion intervals, and allocation of the 32 KB FIFO by a simple command structure.

Ultra-low-noise power supplies and a low drift voltage reference—critical for accurate measurements with a 16-bit resolution—characterize the design of PCM-ADIO’s analog section. “Also, special layout techniques and low drift resistor networks are used to maintain precision, accuracy, and long-term stability of this board,” says WinSystems. The board operates from–40 to 85 deg C. List price for PCM-ADIO is $765 and delivery is stock to three weeks.
