Exclusive: Wireless LAN for data exchange
Scalance W wireless LAN from Siemens Energy & Automation operates over three wireless protocols in one system.
Scalance W wireless LAN from Siemens E&A ensures critical data are received and transmitted when and where they’re most needed.
Scalance W wireless LAN from Siemens Energy & Automation operates over three wireless protocols in one system. It provides data rates of up to 54 Mbits/second and operating speeds of 2.4 GHz (802.11b and 802.11g) or 5 GHz (802.11a).
Featuring deterministic control for client modules, the LAN frees up bandwidth and ensures critical data are received and transmitted when and where they are needed most. Scalance W completes Siemens’ line of industrial Ethernet infrastructure products, complementing its Scalance X industrial Ethernet switches and Scalance S security modules.
Raj Rajani, Siemens product marketing manager, says the product delivers a complete industrial wireless LAN (IWLAN) solution, providing access points, client modules, varying types of antennas, power supplies, cables, and connectors. “We’ve incorporated all of the convenient features associated with wireless access and pushed them to the next level by incorporating superior data security, critical client data reservation, and the flexibility of 802.11b/g/a open standards,” says Rajani. “The industrial ruggedness of the product eliminates the need for enclosures. As a result, costs are reduced and users gain enhanced installation flexibility because the system may be mounted directly on machines, ceilings, or roofs.”
Advanced industry standard security features designed into the system are easily managed without special training. Scalance W protects against unauthorized access by incorporating Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) security and Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) with 128-bit encryption. It operates at temperatures between -20 and 60°C, and features IP65 protection against dust, water, and foreign bodies. It is easily configured and deployed using a Web-based management tool included with the product.
