One of the most useful documents in the networks and communication area of the control and automation field is the ”Fieldbus Comparison Chart.” Originally developed by Synergetic Micro Systems, which later merged with Lantronix, the chart is now offered by Grid Connect Inc., which was recently spun out of Lantronix.

The chart includes background information, physical characteristics, transport mechanisms and performance of all major and most minor fieldbus protocols developed in the past 20 years. These include Ethernet, Profibus, DeviceNet, FOUNDATION fieldbus, Modbus, CANopen, Interbus, AS-i, ArcNet and others.

The background section includes technology developer, year introduced, governing standard and openness. Physical characteristics include network topology, physical media, maximum devices and maximum distance. Transport mechanism includes communication methods, transportation properties, data transfer size, arbitration methods, error checking and diagnostics.
