Flat-panel LCDs: Backlighting brightens displays

LED backlighting technology from CI Lumen Industries offers numerous advantages for display panels including higher brightness with less heat generation at lower power consumption.

Patent-pending LED backlighting development from CI Lumen Industries is suited for a variety of display panels. According to the company, the technology addresses concerns for power consumption and heat relevant elevated brightness levels. It may be applied to LCD panels made by nearly any manufacturer.

LED backlighting offers a number of advantages including sunlight readability. The solid state nature of LEDs makes them suitable for harsh environments such as extreme cold, shock, and vibration. Their longer lifetimes and high reliability reportedly make them especially well suited for heavy industrial applications.

LED backlighting was developed for panels requiring brightness levels of 800 nits or more. According to CI Lumen, its technology is well suited for panels ranging from 5 to 19 in. with 800 to 1,300 nits at low power levels. A typical 15-in. panel retrofit with the backlighting technology at 1,000 nits is said to consume only 24 W. In comparison, cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) of equivalent brightness would need 65 W. Reduced power levels help maintain thermal levels comparable to OEM panel specs.

“The ability to increase brightness without adding power or increasing the need for thermal management makes LED backlighting an optimal solution for countless applications,” said James Hoffman, CTO at CI Lumen. LED backlighting is said to offer a number of advantages: It requires no inverter, thereby reducing EMI emissions. It operates in harsh environments and activates immediately. Solid state LEDs are less fragile than glass tubes and common product lifetimes of 60,000 to 100,000 hr are possible with little or no degradation.
