The free Elsevier Science Web site Scirus has indexed data of 13 million patents from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), the European Patent Office (EPO), the Japanese Patent Office (JPO) and the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the company reports.

“Patent information provides insight into new technology trends and links to existing scientific information, enabling the scientific community to build upon previous research and technology,” explains Ammy Vogtlander, general manager of Scirus. Patents are loaded in Scirus in an alliance with LexisNexis , using Scirus technology for indexing scientific information. Patents included are deemed relevant to the scientific community based on categorization by patent offices. Results provide links to the full text at the appropriate patent office or Espacenet, part of EPO’s Web site, where all patent information is stored.

Scirus also provides access to peer-reviewed articles, patent information, author home pages, and university URLs, with basic and advanced search options. A searchbox is available to download. Web sites may be submitted to Scirus. Elsevier Science and LexisNexis are sister companies of Control Engineering .
