Introduction

While some industrial networking products were designed specifically for the harsh and demanding environments in which they operate, other products, such as Ethernet switches, first appeared in office-based versions. In the past, some industrial networking implementations have tried to make do with office-grade products, or products that were not totally adapted to the conditions under which they were expected to operate. Today, appropriately hardened products are available from the network edge, where IEDs are first connected to the network all the way through to the concentrators, switches, and routers that transmit data to the IT department. There are a number of things to consider in creating hardened products, the most important of which are listed below:

  • Ability to withstand extremes of heat and cold

  • Reliability and redundancy

  • Electrical shielding

  • Protection against dusty, dirty, damp, or corrosive environments

  • DC power options
