Incremental approaches to migration

Improvements can be made to control systems without having to remove or replace major chunks of the hardware. Video: ABB suggests practical possibilities for system evolution.

With the huge population of old control systems running so many process plants, it’s no wonder that companies are looking for ways to make improvements without the pain of a major migration. While adding system-wide advances in functionality may not be possible without a major migration, there are smaller scale improvements that can be added with minimal disruptions. Such improvements are often referred to as evolutionary.

In the attached video, two of ABB’s evolution managers (Thomas Björklund and David Le Duc) offer their observations on the topic and an example of adding new functionality to a legacy platform.
