Loop Tuning Fundamentals
.
Understanding and Tuning Control Loops , Course TC05, 3 days, 2.1 CEU credits
The course is for those who would like to gain a better understanding of how to tune control loops, whether they have tuned loops but would like to become more proficient or they have never tuned a loop before. Registrants should have a basic understanding of instrumentation and controls (either by working experience or taking fundamental courses such as FG07 Introduction to Industrial Automation and Control). Topics include Review of Feedback Control Concepts and Components; Control Modes; Dynamic and Steady State Considerations; Tuning Control Systems; Cascade Control; Ratio Control; Feedforward Control; and Safety Concerns and Procedures when Operating Control Systems.
Classroom/laboratory exercises include a demonstration of the components required for closed loop control, a review of start-up procedures for single and multi-loop systems; tuning of feedback control loops via different methods; the opportunity to tune cascade, ratio, and feedforward control systems; tuning using PC-based simulation software; observation of the operation and tuning of a feedback control loop; and the opportunity to tune cascade, ratio, and feedforward control systems using a PC-Based simulation software.
The course includes the ISA text Fundamentals of Process Control Theory, 3rd Edition
Troubleshooting Instrumentation and Control Systems , Course TC10, 2 days, 1.4 CEU Credits
The course teaches a systematic approach to troubleshooting and start-up as they apply to single- and multi-loop control loops. It covers how pressure, level, flow, and temperature loops operate to maintain good process control systems. Knowledge of instrumentation and control is assumed.
Topics include Approaches to Troubleshooting; Logical Analysis Troubleshooting; Review of ISA Standard Diagrams and Symbols; Single-Loop Feedback Control Troubleshooting; Multi-Loop Control Systems Troubleshooting; Introduction to Digital Control Systems; Distributed Control Functions for Troubleshooting; and Start-up Concerns.
Classroom/laboratory exercises include diagnosing and solving problems related to single-loop control loops; diagnosing and solving problems with ratio, cascade and three-element drum level control loop systems; diagnosing and solving problems using DCS displays for information; and troubleshooting several single control loop problems using the portable trainer.
