Translating industrial processes into simple, understandable terms is the function of a new book from ISA (Instrumentation, Systems, and Automation Society) . Instrumentation and Control Systems Documentation by Frederick A. Meier and Clifford A. Meier (ISBN: 1-55617-870-0) is a helpful resource for process control newcomers and offers experienced professionals insights into using symbols (and their variations) and documents more effectively as well as examining pitfalls to avoid.

The book explains and applies the symbols and documents used to define a modern industrial instrumentation and control system. The authors show how symbol-based “language” may resemble hieroglyphics to those unfamiliar with the nomenclature, but actually holds a wealth of information once explained. Documents discussed include process flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation drawings, instrument lists, specification forms, logic diagrams, installation details, locations plans, and loop diagrams.

Also available from the ISA bookshelf is the second edition of Basic and Advanced Regulatory Control by Harold L. Wade (ISBN: 1-55617-873-5). Revised text teaches the practice of process control for the wet process industries. New topics in this version include tuning feedback control loops and multiplicative feedforward control among other control techniques. The author stresses the study of real, imperfect processes rather than system theory, and uses examples from the commercial world to show how to apply engineering experience, intuition, and knowledge to a particular process.
