Ixia was recently awarded U.S. Patent No. 6,717,917 for its unique methodology for determining the latency of data packets sent across a network in real time. The patent covers a technique, first developed by Ixia in 2000, to simultaneously calculate the latency of large numbers of packet flows, while maintaining real-time statistics for minimum, maximum, and average latency.
The company manufactures IP network testing solutions. It uses its newly patented technique in its network performance solutions, including IxChariot, IxExplorer, and IxScriptMate, and in other network-testing hardware products.
“This patent recognizes the emphasis that our top-notch engineering team puts on developing new technology to solve real-world customer problems. I congratulate all of the Ixia employees who contributed to and supported this work,” says Cliff Hannel, Ixia’s engineering VP. Ixia’s engineers and executives named as inventors on the patent are Joel Weissberger, Mark MacWhirter, Manley Klassen, and Errol Ginsburg, the firm’s founder, president, and CEO.
Latency is a key factor in performance of business-critical applications, including business management software, voice over IP, virtual private network security, network quality of service, and others. Ixia uses its technology to provide real-time latency measurements at wire speeds of up to 10 Gigabits per second, which gives network managers the information they need to better plan their network and optimize performance of their network applications.
Ixia reports that its scalable solutions generate, capture, characterize, and emulate network and application traffic, establishing definitive performance and conformance metrics of network devices or systems under test. Network and telephony equipment manufacturers, semiconductor manufacturers, service providers, and large enterprises use Ixia’s testing solutions to validate the functionality and reliability of complex IP networks, devices, and applications. Ixia’s patented Real World Traffic suite addresses the growing need to test applications and networks prior to deployment under realistic load conditions. Ixia’s analysis solutions use a range of industry-standard interfaces, and are distinguished by their performance, accuracy, reliability, and adaptability to the industry’s constant evolution.
