Metso Paper plans 300 layoffs in Finland, Sweden

Helsinki, Finland— Metso Corp. ‘s fiber and paper technology division, Metso Paper, announced May 27 that it plans to improve its operational efficiency by laying off approximately 300 employees in Finland and Sweden by the end of 2003 or early 2004.

The focus of Metso Paper’s operations will be transferred, along with strengthened resources, to newer, growing markets that are closer to its customers, especially in China and South America. This new focus will also result in organizational changes in Metso Paper’s facilities in the two Nordic countries and in North America.

In Finland, Metso Paper’s units in Jarvenpaa, Jyvaskyla, Turku, Karhula, Valkeakoski and Pori will be subject to the reductions. In Sweden, layoffs will occur in Karlstad and Sundsvall.

Metso is a global supplier of process industry machinery and systems, as well as know-how and aftermarket services. The corporation’s core businesses are fiber and paper technology (Metso Paper), rock and mineral processing (Metso Minerals) and automation and control technology (Metso Automation). In 2002, Metso’s net sales were 4.7 billion euros, while its personnel totaled approximately 28,500.
