Nokia, Finland — Instead of its typical dc solution, Finnish tire manufacturer, Nokian Renkaat, plans to use ABB’s ACS 600 MultiDrive system to control speed and torque of motors driving a new batch mixer here. Nokian’s new 1500 kW mixer operates continuously integrating raw rubber and additives into rubber compounds and incorporates vulcanizing agents. Because it’s fully automated and its drive system is integrated in the process control system, the mixer’s main demand from the drive system is for reliable speed control, which assures desired capacity and quality. ACS 600 attains required torque step rise with an inverter power rating of 3,040 kVA. ACS 600 also uses ABB’s Direct Torque Control drive in which inverter switching directly controls the motor’s flux and torque.
