Motion control: modular, 4-axis Allen-Bradley motion controller

Allen-Bradley CompactLogix 1768-L43 controller, another small modular CompactLogix controller from Rockwell Automation, handles up to four axes of motion.

Chicago —Performance and cost-efficiency are in balance with the new Allen-Bradley CompactLogix 1768-L43 controller from Rockwell Automation ; it can handle up to four axes of motion. At ProMat 2007 , here in Chicago this month, Rockwell Automation said CompactLogix 1768-L43 controller is ideal for material handling applications requiring speed, motion synchronization and information-sharing capabilities, in a small, modular footprint.

As an addition to the Rockwell Automation Kinetix Integrated Motion offering, the new controller combines motion and discrete control into an integrated multitasking platform that helps users lower system costs, simplify installation, and ease maintenance for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and end-users. CompactLogix 1768-L43 supports networks (including DeviceNet, ControlNet, and EtherNet/IP) for easy information flow from device through the enterprise business system.

“We’ve taken the capabilities of our ControlLogix based, integrated motion control solution and made them available to material handling customers who need these features in applications of four axes or less,” said Mike Hannah, product manager, Rockwell Automation. “This enables customers to leverage all the benefits of Kinetix Integrated Motion, while cost-effectively integrating their small motion applications with the rest of the enterprise.”

The platform eliminates the need for a battery, reducing maintenance and support issues, and it supports removable CompactFlash memory that can be used as a program and firmware storage area, providing the user with the ability to archive projects that can be loaded to multiple controllers, Hannah suggested.

CompactLogix uses the same Logix control engine, motion, networking technology, and communications services as the Allen-Bradley ControlLogix and SoftLogix controllers, part of the Rockwell Automation Integrated Architecture. The controller will support 38 embedded motion instructions and preloaded motion parameters offered on the ControlLogix controllers. CompactLogix uses Rockwell Software RSLogix 5000 programming software so users can move easily from one Logix application to another without additional program development or training.
