Networking technology: HART award winner is major Emerson, Profibus user
The HART Communication Foundation announced at the 2007 PowerGen Show in New Orleans that StatoilHydro, has won the 2007 HART Plant of the Year award for its project at the Ormen Lange gas field in Norway. This facility uses Emerson’s AMS Suite and field devices which the company cites as key enablers in StatoilHydro’s effective use of predictive diagnostics for the Ormen Lange project, including the subsea installations, onshore terminal and the world’s longest sub sea gas pipeline project.
( You can read the full award story in the December issue of Control Engineering .) The award recognizes StatoilHydro’s innovative use of HART Communication with a Profibus DP network to deliver diagnostics to plant personnel. StatoilHydro’s commitment to predictive diagnostics, along with the number and the extensive range of various HART instruments and valves from multiple vendors, made them an ideal recipient for the recognition.
At this difficult-to-access North Sea location, online diagnostics from more than 350 continuously monitored valves supply critical information to operations, maintenance and reliability personnel, as well as to experts around the world. Emerson says that using AMS Device Manager with the ValveLink snap-on application as part of its PlantWeb digital plant architecture, provides online diagnostics that warn of pending valve problems, save troubleshooting time, and minimize unnecessary personnel trips into potentially hazardous areas to check status. AMS Device Manager provides an interface that allows online communication with HART field devices over a Profibus DPV1 network, an essential capability for leveraging and maximizing StatoilHydro’s investment in HART-enabled devices.
The Ormen Lange gas field is Norway’s largest gas field and is situated in the Northern sector of the Norwegian Sea. It is being operated during the development phase by StatoilHydro. Norske Shell will take over full operation of the facility at the end of 2007.
“We are delighted that our user has won this prestigious award and achieved recognition for their technical innovation,” said Craig Llewellyn, president of Emerson’s asset optimization division. “StatoilHydro worked creatively with Emerson to execute its vision for predictive maintenance in an open architecture to maximize asset availability and performance.”
The Plant of the Year Award is given annually by the HART Communication Foundation to recognize people, companies and sites that are using the full capabilities of HART technology to achieve improved operations, lower costs and increased availability.
