Noise-immune torque transducers

Hoffman Estates, Ill .-A series of low-capacity, noncontact torquemeters for measurement of static and dynamic torque includes the ability to obtain reliable readings from electrically noisy inputs. MCRT 29000T torquemeters-available from S. Himmelstein and Company-use new proprietary technology to make them insensitive to severe electromagnetic interference (EMI) produced by the latest IGBT-based adjustable-speed drives, says the company. Rapid power switching of insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) used in these high-performance drives causes the EMI effect.

These torquemeters comprise 5 models in the range of 10-200 oz-in. (0.07-1.4 Nm) full-scale with 0.1% accuracy, traceable to NIST standards, and offer 400% overload capacity. MCRT 29000T transducers work from stall to maximum speed in either direction of rotation. Features that enhance performance and make for long service life of these devices include beryllium-copper shafts, splash proof construction, permanent lubrication, and a ferrite-free signal transfomer ruggedized for harsh environments (vibration, hydraulic fluids, etc.).

An optional encoder (dual-track, 512 ppr) is available for speed and position sensing. Typical applications of these transducers are measurement and control of torque in small dc and step motors, small pumps and fans, or small gear/belt drives.
