Though total market revenue declined 13.5% from 2000 to 2001, many human-machine interface (HMI) suppliers in North America reported that orders started to increase in 1Q02, and that the HMI is expected to recover and experience healthy growth from 2002 to 2005, according to a recent study by IMS (Austin, Tex.; Wellingborough, England).

The study also projects strong growth in proprietary and PC-based operator terminals using touchscreen technologies, while text displays and text-based operator panels are expected to decline, mainly because graphical panels are easier to use and offer more functions.
