OSIsoft introduces `embedded historian’

By Control Engineering Staff July 24, 2002

San Leandro, CA – Long-term data storage will be the next embedded function, according to OSIsoft values per second.

ECHO architecture lets OEMs create data historians for any device running a Windows operating system.

The tool, called ECHO (Embedded Component Historian Object), encapsulates all time-series data with `no data loss and no performance degradation’ over time, and imposes `virtually no limitations’ on storage or retrieval of time-series data, according to Matt Miller, product manager.

Speaking about some ways it could be used, Mr. Miller noted that a manufacturer could get data for remote diagnostics and could collect data about customer use for market research and liability management. `The user has more access to data for improved process analysis and preventive maintenance, can use predictive metrics, has time-stamped data for optimising complex systems, and can implement business strategies in real time,’ he says.

The product interoperates with MS-SQL and object databases through OLEDB/ADO or to other client tools via OPC. A free demo is available for download at www.echohistorian.com .

Founded in 1980, OSIsoft says it has an installed base of over 6,000 Plant Information systems worldwide.
