Pack Expo 2005: Kraft packaging line

By Control Engineering Staff September 26, 2005

Las Vegas —Special general session added to Conference at PACK EXPO at 12:45 p.m. today [Sept. 26, 2005]. Working with a team of packaging machinery manufacturers, Kraft Foods recently developed an award-winning packaging line for its Easy Mac product, yielding millions of dollars for the bottom line. Kraft engaged Cloud Packaging Solutions LLC, Booth C-5319, a supplier of high-speed packaging equipment and provider of contract packaging services based in Des Plaines, IL, to offer the food company a new way to package the Easy Mac microwavable macaroni-and-cheese product.

The line is the result of collaborative efforts among Kraft’s engineering team, machinery manufacturers and materials suppliers. In addition to Cloud, contributions to the line were made by PMI Cartoning, Inc., Booth C-2910; Hartness Intl., Inc., Booth C-2310; Nordson Corp., Booth C-1106; Brenton Engineering Co., Booth C-2626; Pearson Packaging Systems, Booth C-1620; Goodman Packaging Equipment, Booth C-2924; Priority One, Booth C-2940; Videojet Systems Intl., Booth C-2916; Allen-Bradley, Booth N-7516; ExxonMobil Chemical Co.-Films Div.; National Starch & Chemical Co., Booth C-4228; and Alcan Packaging.

The winning packaging line—and all companies associated with the line—will be the focus of a special session of the Conference at PACK EXPO. This bonus session, sponsored by Packaging Machinery Technology (PMT) magazine, is open to all Conference at PACK EXPO registrants. Attendees must register for this complimentary session.

The Cloud-designed system, which offers absolute precision at very high speeds, pairs single-serving pouches of different materials, stacks and glues the pouches together and places the stacked pouches in a carton or clubstore pack. The line runs at a blistering 1,000 pouches/min and at 10,000 cartons/hr. During the special conference session, the line’s operational details will be highlighted, and Kraft Foods will accept PMT’s Packaging Line of the Year award.

Produced by the Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute (PMMI), the Conference at PACK EXPO runs today through Wednesday. Each day’s program begins with a Keynote Presentation featuring a leading industry figure. Following the Keynote Presentations, the conference program has five concurrent program slots today and four concurrent sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday. This flexible schedule is designed to allow attendees to register and attend individual sessions, working around their other show commitments.

“The Conference at PACK EXPO helps make the show a truly unique experience for attendees,” comments Charles D. Yuska, president of PMMI. “The program is extremely flexible and covers a broad range of topics, so there really is something for everyone.”

Registration for the Conference at PACK EXPO onsite is available on the show floor at the My PACK EXPO kiosks. Cost for attending is $75 per session. The same registration fee applies for the Keynote Presentations, all of which run from 8:30 to 9 a.m.
