Arlington, VA— Pack Expo celebrates its 50thanniversary in 2006 by focusing its annual fall exhibition and conference on the next 50 years. Continued advances in automating coding, filling, labeling, closing, and case packing packages and the production of packages at the point of filling are among future industry trends expected to be discussed and displayed. The Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute (PMMI) event, to be held Oct. 29-Nov. 2 at Chicago’s McCormick Place, is slated to host more than 1,600 exhibitors and 50,000 attendees.

Pack Expo originated in October 1956. The first show was held in Cleveland, OH, and drew 136 exhibitors and 5,000 visitors. Glass was still the primary container and the easy-open can had not yet been invented. Looking ahead, Ben Miyares, vice president of industry relations for PMMI, said, “We are entering a period in which packaging will become an increasingly automated process driven by developments in laser scanning, radio frequency transmissions, nanotechnology, and system simplification. The future is likely to see the emergence of a strong third-party professional packaging sector in which packaging machinery manufacturers independently, and in alliances with others, offer an expanded range of services.”
