Past, Present, and Future of Control Engineering

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Control Engineering , the editors wanted to look back at control, automation, and instrumentation advances over the past 50 years, and assess where we are now in consideration of what’s to come in the next 50 years.

To do that, we spent a great deal of time interviewing experienced automation and controls engineers from Boeing, Case Western Reserve University, Dow Chemical, GM Powertrain, and Unilever to get their views on the industry’s past and future as they see it based on their unique experiences.

Reflections from former editorial director Ed Kompass, who worked on the very first issue of Control Engineering , kick off this special insert. He looks back at the state of analog controls during the infancy of the magazine and considers how photonic and holographic memories are likely to power the computers of tomorrow.

A history of our Editors’ Choice Award winners rounds out this 50th Anniversary insert.
