Motorola Computer Group reports that its PrPMC880 mezzanine module is the “industry’s fastest processor PMC module.” A Power PC processor, MPC7447, allows this standard, single-width module with internal L2 cache and maximum-sized heat sink to operate at speeds up to 1.3 GHz. PrPMC880 also provides Ethernet connectivity at 1 Gbps and is compatible with the recently ratified VITA 32 processor PMC standard.

By using AltiVec technology, the module performs vector parallel processing operations on multiple data elements with one instruction. This support is useful for single instruction, multiple date (SIMD) and vector-capable applications. DDR memory up to 1 gigabyte and its thermal profile means PrPMC880 can address the computational needs of most applications.

In general, a PrPMC is a small board-level module with a low-profile processor and memory subsystem that uses an industry-standard interface to plug on to a baseboard. With 64 MB of Flash memory, up to 1 GB of on-board memory, dual gigabit Ethernet I/O and up to a 133-MHz PCI-X interface, PrPMC880 is ideal for custom architectures requiring a performance upgrade.

As a result, PrPMC880 also reportedly reduces time-to-market and lowers total cost of ownership for higher performance OEM applications with stringent size, speed, and flexibility requirements. The module’s compact size allows it to fit into more embedded equipment, as well as satisfy size and power needs unmet by commercially available mezzanine cards. www.motorola.com/computer
