Housing protects linear transducers

The Gemco Series 950 mill-duty housing from Ametek Automation & Process Technologies was designed for applications where mounting a stand-alone, rod-style linear displacement transducer (LDT) is impractical due to potential physical damage, harsh operating conditions, or mounting limitations.

Ametek says the housing eliminates those concerns and allows the linear position feedback system to perform reliably by protecting the LDT from damage due to temperature, corrosion, shock, vibration, dust, and debris. The Gemco 950MD series features stainless steel construction and a simple two-point mounting system that compensates for lateral or horizontal movement of the machine while in operation.

The series was originally designed for use in steel mills, but it has proven reliable in a wide range of applications where rugged construction, environmental protection, or ease of mounting is required. These include foundries, forging, injection molding, die casting, hydraulic servo applications, lock and dam sites, hydro-electric plants, and water and wastewater treatment facilities.

With available lengths from 2 in. to 20 ft., the series is well suited to retrofits of existing cylinders with an LDT for providing a continuous position feedback signal. It provides a convenient way to mount an internal LDT parallel to the cylinder, eliminating the need to tear down and gun drill the cylinder to accommodate an LDT for position feedback.
