Push-button operation: ICs offer contactless alternative

AS5030 and AS5130 magnetic rotary encoder ICs from austriamicrosystems, with push button and low-power mode features, offer a contactless alternative to mechanical rotary knobs.

Unterpremstaetten, Austria —Two 8-bit absolute magnetic rotary encoder ICs from austriamicrosystems feature push-button and low-power mode features. AS5030 and AS5130 expand the company’s rotary encoder family offering a contactless alternative to mechanical rotary knobs in a variety of automotive and industrial applications.

Devices provide an angle resolution of 1.4° over a 360° turn (8 bit), accessible via digital serial interface (SSI) or pulse width modulated (PWM) outputs. Both offer push-button functionality with user-defined magnet-to-magnet displacement thresholds and operate in low-power modes for use in applications with stringent power consumption requirements. AS5030 has a user-settable, ultra-low-power sleep mode.

Designed for HMIs such as rotary switches and dashboard and appliance knobs, the devices can be configured to provide data via serial interface, PWM, or daisy chain. Daisy chain configuration lets users read the position information of individual devices serially over one two-wire bus. The ICs operate at 5-V supply voltage, cover a temperature range from -40 to 125 °C. and operate at rotational speeds to 30,000 rpm. AS5030 comes in a lead-free TSSOP16 package, AS5130 in a lead-free SSOP16 package.
