The recent acquisition of ICS Triplex is testament to Rockwell Automation ‘s commitment to the process industries, and its grasp of the unique requirements for serving it well. ICS Triplex, a British company known for process safety and fault-tolerant technology for the oil & gas industry, counts Chevron, BP, Shell, Exxon Mobile, and Fina among its customers.

For Rockwell, the ICS buy adds geographic and vertical-industry expertise while deepening Rockwell’s safety integrity level from Level 2, double redundancy, to Level 3 with the ICS Triplex solution.

“ICS Triplex offers triple redundant safety systems,” says Craig Resnick, research director for Dedham, Mass.-based ARC Advisory Group. “The acquisition was a bold statement on [Rockwell’s] part that they’re in process for the long haul.”

In addition to stronger safety and control features that will be integrated with the Rockwell Automation Process Solutions platform, ICS Triplex brings more than 500 employees with domain expertise in heavy process industry environments. ICS will continue to operate under its own name as a separate entity within the larger company.

According to Terry Gebert, VP and general manager, Rockwell Automation Manufacturing and Process Solutions, “We have mutual customers, and will bring new customers to each other. There’s not a lot of overlap between companies, which makes it a good fit for us. [ICS] has a great enterprise and we want it to continue without disruption of services to its customers. But there are tremendous synergies that come in putting them into the process group. It’s a great fit. The goal is to drive the value they provide in critical process control.”
