Rugged PCs: BIOS-level support for security software ensures laptop recovery
The Toughbook 19, designed using the military’s MIL-STD-810 test procedures for equipment durability under harsh conditions, now has BIOS-level software for tracking lost or stolen units
Secaucus, NJ and Vancouver, Canada —An agreement between Panasonic Computer Solutions Co., a provider of mobile rugged PCs, and Absolute Software Corp. adds Absolute Software’s guaranteed Computrace theft recovery software to the BIOS firmware of Panasonic’s Toughbook line of notebook PCs. With Computrace, Panasonic mobile PC users can securely track their Toughbooks in any mobile or remote environment, locate and recover them if lost or stolen, and remotely delete sensitive data if required.
Panasonic has embedded BIOS support for Absolute’s patented Computrace-enabled security solutions within its CF-19 and CF-30 rugged notebooks and CF-T5 business-rugged tablet alternative. The CF-W5 and CF-Y5 business-rugged models, as well as the CF-74 semi-rugged notebook, are scheduled to begin shipping later this year with Computrace embedded. Additional models will follow. Panasonic also will resell Absolute Computrace Computer Theft Recovery, Data Protection, and Secure Asset Tracking software.
Although certain terms and conditions apply, if a missing computer protected by Computrace Complete is not recovered within 60 days, the customer may be eligible for a recovery guarantee payment of up to $1,000. According to the company, Computrace software is already embedded in the BIOS of computers from Dell, Lenovo, Gateway, HP, Panasonic, and Fujitsu.
