Oki Electric Industry Co. Ltd . has developed a 13-bit digital source driver for high-definition, liquid crystal display (HD LCD) systems. MT3100, said to be a key component for HD LCD systems, uses Oki’s high-speed image transferring method—flat-panel low-voltage differential signaling, or FP-LVDS—to produce a data transfer speed of 500 Mbps. Samples are expected to be available next month. The company expects the driver to be used in HD LCD TVs and monitors that require complex color management. “We also plan to promote the technology to LCD module manufacturers, aiming to achieve a de-facto standard for high-speed interfaces,” says Akira Kamo, president of Silicon Solutions Co. at Oki Electric.Device is said to be the “world’s first” 13-bit source driver with approximately 8,200 gray-scale levels. With 13-bit resolution of gray-scale for each output port, it individually controls the characteristics of voltage-transmittance rate for RGB, an important parameter of LCDs that creates a clearer, more natural image than current controls.
