SPS/IPC/Drives 2003: Great expectations at Nuremberg
The European electronic automation exhibition and conference, SPS/IPC/Drives, opens on an optimistic note next week in Nuremberg, Germany, for a three-day run, Nov. 25-27, 2003.

The European electronic automation exhibition and conference, SPS/IPC/Drives , opens on an optimistic note next week in Nuremberg, Germany, for a three-day run, Nov. 25-27, 2003. This automation event has shown steady growth even in the face of unfavorable economic times through its well-focused presentation of technologies. SPS/IPC/Drives draws a high number of industry-savvy attendees. And there is plenty to see here for motors, drives & motion control professionals.
As the name implies, this show was founded on the core technologies of programmable controllers—”SPS” stands for PLC in German—industrial computers, and electric drives/motors. However, exhibit sectors have expanded to keep pace with newer technologies and developments as reflected in coverage of fieldbus technology, visualization/HMI, software, image processing, intelligent sensors, safety technology, and networks and industrial communication (IT). International companies of interest for drives and motion control enthusiasts include ABB , Beckhoff , Bosch Rexroth , Danfoss , Elau , Schneider Electeric , Siemens , and Vacon , among others.
SPS/IPC/Drives 2003 has expanded to six exhibition halls at the Nuremberg Exhibition Center. Some 880 exhibitors (790 in 2002) are signed on for the show that last year drew nearly 23,000 visitors. The roster of exhibitors from outside Germany also has grown to 108, coming from 22 countries (compared to last year’s 89 companies from 18 nations).
U.S. companies tend to have very visible representation here, but this statistic gets ”tricky” because at a European show the booths of many international companies are managed by the local subsidiary and listed as such. Among a short list of U.S. Exhibitors are Animatics , Baldor , Contemporary Controls , Copley Controls , Danaher Motion , DVT , Emerson Motion Control , Galil Motion Control , GE Fanuc Intellution , National Instruments , Rockwell Automation , and Woodhead Connectivity .
The conference portion of SPS/IPC/Drives complements the event. It consists of lectures, tutorials, and special presentations on a wide cross-section of Drives and IT topics (mostly in German). Main points of this year’s Drives Conference will be ”Ethernet” and ”Drives Communication” sessions on the first day. In 2002, the conference consisted of more than 116 sessions.
