LG. Philips LCD , a maker of thin-film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) technology, has been recognized by the European Union’s (EU) German accreditation organization as an internationally accredited RoHS testing laboratory. EU TÜV SÜD accreditation means that RoHS tests performed at LG. Philips’ in-house lab will have the same credibility as those done by official authorized test centers. The company reports it is the first TFT-LCD panel manufacturer to be recognized in this way.

“Authorization as an internationally accredited testing laboratory will allow LG. Philips LCD to reduce costs associated with external testing, expedite the product accreditation process, and prevent the outflow of its core technologies,” said Sang Deog Yeo, executive vice president for LG. Philips LCD Development Center.

In addition, the company has established an Eco LCD Information System to ensure it has all the information it needs to comply with environmental regulations in markets worldwide. To comply further with environmental regulations, the company is operating a Green Purchasing System, which blocks the use of hazardous material at the purchasing stage. The system enabled the company to exclude the use of lead in its products in January 2005, implement RoHS verification marking last month, and conduct environmental assessments on its products from manufacturing through disposal.

The RoHS directive restricts the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment in products made or sold in the EU and Japan as of July 1. Affected substances include lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyl (PBB), and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants.
