Tyco Electronics will market a Padless Touch Sensor (PTS) under a recent worldwide exclusive licensing agreement with Pressenk Instruments, Inc. PTS is a solid-state touch control technology that uses patented signal generation and detection in place of switch technologies such as membrane switches, mechanical keyboards, and solid-state keyboards.
PTS technology provides robust performance in a wide range of environments and is applicable to appliance controls, industrial process controls, medical equipment, kiosks, among others. Its open-architecture design permits easy integration or retrofit into existing control switch applications. Solid-state control hardware can be environmentally sealed to meet an IP67 rating. The device operates in temperatures ranges from–20 °C to 105° C.
The touch surface can be designed with virtually any dielectric material including glass, plastic, marble, leather, or any rough or smooth surface less than 25 mm thick. Touch sensitivity is adjustable and operators can properly actuate the device with or without gloves. The touch surface area size is customizable to the application. Response time, once the PTS is touched, is less than 4 milliseconds per key. It is rated for more than five million touch cycles and does not incorporate any mechanical link between the touch interface and the control electronics.
