An updated guide to designing and assessing safety-critical systems to international standards is now available. Second edition of Functional Safety—A straightforward guide to applying IEC 61508 and related standards, by David J. Smith and Kenneth G. L. Simpson includes examples, checklists for demonstrating conformance, advice on implementing the standard and obtaining certification, and more. This edition also includes a new chapter on IEC 61511, the process sector standard, as well as two new case studies.
International standard IEC 61508 addresses the reliability of all safety-critical systems, such as emergency shutdowns, regardless of application. The book is intended to overcome the complexity of the standard by introducing it in the context of safety in general before moving on to providing practical advice about implementing it. It also explains how IEC 61508 relates to second-tier standards such as IEC 61511, 61513, UKOOA, ISA S84.01, and DIN standards. Templates for drawing up specific implementation plans and information on self-certification are provided.
Book (ISBN: 9999900267) is available from Elsevier Butterworth-Heinemann .
