Wireless: Data radio, radio enclosure unveiled separately

Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and Middletown, PA – An ultra-integrated radio plus a radio-ready enclosure were among recent industrial wireless product news introductions. Control Microsystems Inc. introduced the radio; Phoenix Contact offers a new wireless enclosure.
Control Microsystems Inc. (CMI) . Mounted within a SCADAPack controller lid, the KR20 is suitable for adding or retrofitting wireless communication into cramped enclosures.

CMI KR20, 900 MHz spread spectrum radio
CMI offers a new spread-spectrum 900 MHz radio, the KR20, certified for hazardous locations.

It uses the same advanced radio technology as the SCADAWave KR50 and shares many of its features, including high-speed data throughput up to 256 Kbps, repeater functionality, multiple data streams, and network bridging.
Fully programmable, locally or remotely, KR20 supports industry-standard DNP3, Modbus, and IEC 870-5-101 protocols and is certified for hazardous locations. It can be optionally ordered as part of the SCADAPack controller.
“For customers requiring full featured radios, the Ultra KR20 provides an advanced solution in a tight package”, said Dale Symington, CMI vice president of product strategy.
Syminton says, “The product uses a secure, unlicensed 900 MHz spread-spectrum design offering innovative collision-avoidance and long range capability.”
In other news, the new Phoenix Contact radio-ready NEMA 4X enclosure simplifies installation of industrial wireless radio modems and small RTU devices.

Protecting a wireless investment is easier and integration faster with the Phoenix Contact radio-ready NEMA 4X enclosure.

The RAD-SYS-NEMA4X-900 radio-ready enclosure has a 24 V dc power supply, a UPS system, surge protection, and an antenna adapter.
The radio-ready enclosure provides a secure solution for remote data collection while saving installation time and preventing wiring errors. A pre-wired power rail has space for a Trusted Wireless or GSM/GPRS radio modem and other components.
The 24 V dc power with backup prevents failure of critical operations due to power dips and brown-outs, and the surge arrestor protects against lightning and surges.
The fiberglass enclosure can be mounted in harsh indoor or outdoor environments. A dual-latching lockable lid prevents unauthorized access.
