Numbers were up on all fronts at the 2004 Society for Information Display Symposium, Seminar, and Exhibition, held in May in Seattle. Overall attendance was 6,500, up from 5,600 a year ago, reported convention management. The additional one-day SID business conference drew 705 registrants, compared to 404 in 2003. Attendance at the technical symposium was up 20%.

In addition to attendance improvements, display sales are also exploding, SID reports. Revenue from the sale of LCD panels for primary applications is expected to reach $42.3 billion in 2004, up more than 51% from 2003, said Barry Young, cfo for market research firm DisplaySearch . Trends observed by SID at the conference include the profusion of large LCD panels for television, ever-increasing size of PDPs (plasma display panels), technological innovation and increasing image quality in small panels for cell phones and other mobile applications, and a continually growing importance of touch interfaces.

The next SID symposium is scheduled for May 22-27, 2005, in Boston. SID is a major international display event devoted to displays, display products, display materials and components, and display applications.
