Campbell, Calif. – ZiLog Inc. recently began shipping its new eZ80190 web server product, which is designed to enable simple, cost-effective and direct connections to networks and the Internet. The firm adds its new embedded processor delivers 15 Internet protocols.

The eZ80 uses standard Internet protocols to enable direct connections over local area networks (LAN), wide area networks (WAN), and the Internet. It is code compatible with ZiLog’s Z80 and Z180 products, and reportedly offers complete eight-bit-based Internet connectivity, high-speed performance and superior memory support. The eZ80 is also the first in a family of high-performance processors that provide a complete Internet development environment: evaluation board, emulator, integrated development environment (IDE), and a full-featured embedded Internet protocol suite.

This web server is also the foundation of ZiLog’s long-range server strategy that features single-chip connectivity solutions with IrDA, Ethernet, wireless and voice over Internet protocol (VoIP). In the first version, the embedded web server software suite is loaded in external memory. Future versions of eZ80 will integrate on-chip memory, where the software suite may reside.

‘Network and Internet connectivity will one day be as ubiquitous as electricity, and will be found in devices from the factory floor to the home. ZiLog is taking the eZ80 into applications where the PC simply cannot go,’ says Michael Burger, ZiLog’s executive vp and gm. ‘In one silicon-and-software package, eZ80’s eight-bit microprocessor features the CPU, operating system and connectivity of a PC on a smaller, more manageable scale.”

In addition, eZ80 operates at 50 MHz, and features an embedded web server software suite that implements 15 Internet protocols, including TCP/IP and HTTP. The other 13 full-featured Internet protocols stacks implemented by the software suite are: IPv4, UDP, ARP, RARP, IGMP, ICMP, PPP, BOOTP/DHCP, SMTP, TFTP, SNMP, Telnet, and FTP.

The product’s Internet-compliant stack suite allow engineers to create products that end-users may remotely manage, control, diagnose and reconfigure using an Internet browser on a hand-held device, cell phone or a personal computer. Consequently, eZ80 is designed to perform the complicated functions required by industrial control, factory automation, building and facility management, remote monitoring and control, security, online information kiosks, vending machines, home and office automation, and Internet and digital appliances.
